I think they’re shallow soup bowls – probably part of a larger dinnerware set, about 8in 20cm diameter, exposing a pale reddish material terracotta? No backstamps or impressed marks seen, other than the hand-painted roosters and numbers 11 and Would welcome an opinion, and if possible identification of the pattern and possible date.

Hispano-Moresque ware is a style of initially Islamic pottery created in Al Andalus or Muslim Spain, which continued to be produced under Christian rule in styles blending Islamic and European elements. It was the most elaborate and luxurious pottery being produced in Europe until the Italian maiolica industry developed sophisticated styles in the 15th century, and was exported over most of Europe.

The industry’s most successful period was the 14th and 15th centuries. Around , the Moors conquered Spain. Over the following centuries, they introduced two ceramic techniques to Europe : glazing with an opaque white tin-glaze , and lustreware , which imitates metallic finishes with iridescent effects. Hispano-Moresque wares use both processes, applying the paint as an overglaze which is then fired again.

I made some research and I noticed that there is not much info handy on the subject on the web… So I went through my books and art magazines and I found some interesting facts. About Ulisse Cantagalli Ulisse Cantagalli was a superb artist and an even better businessman.

Not much of him is known before when he took over the family factory in Florence and started to produce highly decorative Italian ceramics in the Renaissance style. At the time the taste for this kind of pottery was a very hot trend in the English speaking countries. He devoted his artistic energy to the understanding of the techniques and the designs of the old masters from Gubbio, Deruta, Urbino and other important ceramic centers.

His ability to master the ruby and golden luster techniques of Mastro Giorgio Andreoli brought the factory to fame, particularly in Britain. He introduced him to influential collectors in England and US and encouraged him to participate to International exhibitions. Cantagalli died in His wife and daughter continued to operate the factory in Florence.

Guido Gambone defined a unique style in which he fused traditional ceramic methods with amorphous forms that echoed equally the art of the past and of his modern day. His dynamic objects, in which he often experimented with glazes and patterns, garnered great popularity and today are treasured holdings in private and museums collections such as the one at the Brooklyn Museum. Born in Montella in the southern Italian region of Campania, Gambone received his earliest training in the art of ceramics at the Manifattura Artistica Ceramica Salernitana in nearby Vietri sul Mare.

He continued his studies at the Industria Ceramica Salernitana I. Although the company initially, grew slowly given the wartime conditions, Gambone won awards for his pieces made at La Faenzerella only a few years later. In , for instance, Gambone received the Premio Faenza award for a ceramic panel he had created. He continued in this style into the s, when he established a second workshop, La Tirrena, in Florence.

This is a good Chinese Famille Rose bowl in excellent condition dating from the early 20th century. The hand painted bowl has good strong colours with numerous.

With their bold colours and strong lines, these wares produced chiefly between the 15th and 17th centuries have been collectable almost since the day they were first produced, says our specialist Sara Plumbly. Iznik is in fact the name of a town previously known as Nicaea which lies some 90 kilometres southeast of Istanbul, and was the site of the potteries of the Ottoman Empire. A group of Iznik ceramics, purchased between and on the Greek Island of Rhodes by the Cluny Museum in Paris, led to a lasting misattribution of these wares to the island.

Excavations of the kilns at Iznik have since righted this misattribution, but many older publications will still refer to Rhodian ceramics. Iznik vessels of all shapes and sizes were produced — for eating and serving food, and for functions relating to religious worship. Of these, dishes, followed by jugs, are the most commonly found. Other forms occasionally come up for auction, but are rarer. The tiles we see coming to market are likely to have been the surplus of this large-scale production.

Iznik can be dated quite precisely, largely on the basis of the colours and designs of specific works. The decoration is heavily informed by that of other media, such as manuscript illumination, although many designs are also borrowed from the Chinese porcelains that were prized at the Ottoman court. Designs become simpler, but still frequently take Chinese motifs for inspiration.
